What you need to know

When you apply to American Public University System

APUS is an open-enrollment university with a non-competitive admissions process. Anyone who wants to work toward their educational goals can apply and be accepted into either the American Military University or the American Public University, depending on their military or civilian status. Between the two schools, APUS offers 200 degree and certificate programs in the arts and humanities, business, education, health sciences, science, technology, engineering, math, security, and global studies.

Since APUS was founded to help meet specialized military educational needs, it’s no surprise that cyber defense remains one of the university’s specialties. The system’s Center for Cyber Defense (CCD) is the hub of cybersecurity, building a network of students, faculty, staff, and administrators from all cyber-related programs, other disciplines, and consultants from outside the university. The goal is to create the next-generation cybersecurity workforce of leaders and professionals for the nation’s defense.

APUS is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Select programs are also affiliated with professional organizations, such as the Council on Education for Public Health, Society for Human Resource Management, National Academy of Sports Medicine, and The National Council on Family Relations.

Although APUS is headquartered in Charles Town, West Virginia, there is no physical campus. Students attend classes and complete coursework online. The average undergraduate class size is 16, while graduate courses typically have just seven students. 54 percent of those currently enrolled are active-duty military. Civilians, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses make up the rest of the student body.

APUS does encourage networking with fellow students and faculty members through social media. It has also partnered with Walmart via the company’s Lifelong Learning Program. Walmart employees are eligible to receive a 15 percent tuition grant for attending APUS, and college credit may be applied for work experience.

Notable faculty and alumni of APUS include Wendy B. Lawrence, retired Space Shuttle veteran and Navy aviator, Nicole Malachowski, the first female pilot selected to fly as part of the USAF Thunderbirds, and Yasser Harrak, the Canadian writer and human rights activist.
