Many people look to career assessment tests and personality tests as a means to help identify what jobs they’re best suited for. While no one test can clearly define what career is best for you, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely referenced exam to assess personalities when choosing an occupation that meets their personality type.

To take the MBTI test, you will need to schedule it with a career development specialist, psychologist, or another mental health professional because this is a psychological assessment. They will need to be MBTI certified or register online for a fee through the Center for Applications of Psychological Type (CAPT), including a one-hour feedback session.
According to the test, there are 16 different personality types, and you will receive your four-letter type upon completion of the exam. The middle two letters will reference how you perceive information and make decisions and those characteristics that help in career planning.
Are there other personality tests for careers?
While the MBTI is the most well recognized of the exams and tends to be the most accurate test for identifying personality types, there are other online tests. By conducting a simple Google search, you’ll find a wide array of tests at different price points.
When taking other tests, keep in mind that they’re not monitored or administered by mental health professionals and may not provide the most accurate results.
If a personality test is important to you, it might be wise to invest the time and money into the Myers Briggs Test. There are countless tests out there that you can take, but they might end up being a waste of time. Or worse, not provide any real feedback.
Don’t get too hung up on the process. Do some research on careers and compare your occupational interests with your MBTI results. That will likely be the best approach to trying to match your personality to the right career for you.
