Many students who want to become nurses are interested in government careers. You’d be surprised how often we get asked, “are there good nursing government jobs?”
The good news is that there are a ton of government positions for nurses. Particularly if you already have your BSN.
From the armed forces to serving at the VA (Department of Veterans Affairs) or NIH (National Institute of Health), there are many opportunities for those that want to work for the government.
Let’s take a look at some of the departments that hire for nursing positions.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC)
For anyone that wants to help research and discover protocol for chronic disease prevention and health care throughout the United States, working for the CDC will get you there.
They do everything from research to plan, as well as evaluate and implement programs for treatment of major illnesses like HIV/AIDs, cancer, and diabetes.
The Public Health Advisory Board
Another opportunity if you’re interested in being on the cutting edge of new treatments and health care initiatives is working for the Public Advisory Board. They practice disease intervention, analyze health issues, and provide technical assistance to local and state governments.
The Office of Veterans Affairs (VA)
Helping our service men is one of the most impactful jobs a nurse can do.Working for the VA will give the opportunity to take care of them, assist with physical therapy, and deliver much-needed health care services.
The VA is always looking for talented nurses who want to assist with either bedside care or outpatient clinical nursing.
National Institute of Health
For nurses interested in medical research that has the ability to change the way medicine works, a position with the National Institute of Health (NIH) will put you in the center of it all.
Many of the discoveries that have come out of the NIH have saved countless lives and help us live longer lives. They study everything from nutrition and diet, to experimental treatments for diabetes and COPD.
The Army Nurse Corps
The Army Nurse Corps puts nurses at the center of patient care and comes with benefits that most won’t get working at a hospital. You have the option to serve in multiple army branches where you can work in emergency rooms, critical care centers, operating rooms, or clinical care centers.
In fact, some army nurses split their time between serving on an army base and in the civilian sector. Not only do positions with the Army allow you to serve your country, but they provide insightful training you can’t get anywhere else.
There are tons of great jobs to be had if your dream is to work for the government as a nurse. Take a look at the open positions and speak to someone who’s serving in departments you’re interested in. The more you learn, the more likely you are to make an informed decision that works for you.
