If you need to get an FSA ID for parents, you can register for a free Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID through various U.S. Department Education websites including the Federal Student Aid site. Simply choose a username and password, enter your personal details, accept the terms and conditions and you’re done!
Your parent FSA ID username and password confirms your identity and grants you access to certain U.S. Department of Education websites. Without an FSA ID, you won’t be able to view information about your child’s financial aid information or electronically sign federal student aid documents.
How to Get an FSA ID for Parents
You can register for your FSA ID at any time. You’ll need one to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), so it’s best to register early to prevent processing delays. Visit a U.S. Department of Education website, such as the Federal Student Aid site, to sign up.
First, set up log-in information. Provide your email address, and choose a username and password you’ll remember. Your username must be unique to you. Your password should be between eight and 30 characters, with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, and special characters.
Next, you’ll enter a range of personal information including your name, birthdate, Social Security number, mailing address, and preferred language. For further security, you’ll complete four challenge questions and answers that you may be asked if you ever forget your login details.
Of note, beginning in 2022, all new users must set up one more more two-step verification methods (text, email, or authenticator app) during the “Create an Account” process. Once one or more two-step verification methods are set up, users will receive a secure code each time they log in to StudentAid.gov.
You must agree to the terms and conditions, then submit your parent FSA ID details. If you submitted your mobile number or email address, you’ll need to verify them at this stage. To do this, simply respond to the SMS and email messages sent to you.
Do Parents Need an FSA ID?
All parents with dependent students attending college are encouraged to get an FSA ID. Dependent students cannot sign documents like the FAFSA®, so children will need their parents to sign this form for them with the FSA ID. You’ll need an FSA ID if you want to access information about your child’s financial aid for completing your tax return or update your information on your student’s FAFSA®.
You cannot share an FSA ID with your child. You’ll need your own. However, once you have an FSA ID, it’s yours for life. You can continue using the same FSA ID to handle financial aid matters for each college-aged child you have.
How Long After Applying Can I Use It?
The Social Security Administration must verify your information before you can use your FSA ID. This process usually takes one to three days. Once your information is verified, you can start using your FSA ID at U.S. Department of Education websites.
