Saving money on your college education is probably one of the first things you’re thinking about when it comes to going to school. At FRANK, we always get asked, “What is one way to limit college tuition costs?”
Luckily, there’s more than one way to do that. There are several. In some cases, you have to get crafty and in others, it’s common sense.
Let’s take a look at some of the popular ways to lower your tuition costs.
Take courses at a community college
Even if you’re enrolled at a four-year college or university, you can still take classes at community colleges to save money on your education.
While it might seem complicated to attend two different schools, it can be beneficial when it comes to reducing student loan debt. First, you’ll want to enroll in the community college and sign-up for classes that fit with your schedule.
Before even signing up for classes, you’ll want to talk to an academic counselor to ensure the classes you’re taking at the community colleges are transferrable to your four-year colleges.
If you’re an in-state student going to an in-state community college, this hack could save you tons of money! Just make sure you don’t take too many classes and risk burnout.
Take Summer & Winter courses
Taking classes during the summer or winter semester (especially if you do so at a community college), can also help your financial aid go further.
You may not realize it, but financial aid doesn’t last forever. You have six years of financial aid eligibility until you lose it completely (at least as far as gift aid goes). By completing classes faster, you ensure you get the most out of your financial aid package and don’t have to worry about spending money on things like room and board over an additional period of time.
Apply for scholarships
Another great way to limit what you spend on tuition is to apply for as many scholarships as possible. That includes large and small scholarships alike.
A lot of students don’t take the time to apply for smaller scholarships because they don’t feel the small amount of money is worth their time. So really, there’s less competition for them than with other larger scholarships.
And think about this — the more scholarships you apply for, even small amounts, the more money you’re saving on tuition. Any little bit helps.

Apply for financial aid
One last way to limit your college tuition costs is to apply for financial aid. Applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) every year qualifies you for federal and institutional grants you can’t get otherwise. It also helps to qualify you for additional programs like work-study.
Your first step towards saving money on your college tuition should be applying for the FASFA®.
