Maryland State Financial Aid: Grants & Scholarships

The state of Maryland offers financial aid opportunities to Maryland residents including grants and scholarship programs. 

First, File FAFSA®

The first step to an affordable college education in Maryland is filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA®. This financial aid application determines student eligibility for federal student loans, grants including the Pell grant, work-study programs, and some scholarships. 

Apply for Maryland State Financial Aid

Academic Competitiveness Grant

This state sponsored grant is awarded to freshman and sophomore students who are also eligible for the Pell grant. Students are eligible for up to $750 their first year, and $1,300 the following year. 

To apply, students must file their FAFSA® application. 

SMART Grant

Did you File FAFSA® Yet

This grant is awarded to eligible juniors and seniors who are pursuing a degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or science. Students must also qualify for the Pell grant. 

To apply, students must file their FAFSA® application. 

Guaranteed Access Grant-Maryland

This grant is awarded to approximately 1,000 undergrad and grad students each year. The award ranges from $400-$13,800 per year. This need based grant is only available to student residents whose parents are also residents of Maryland. 

To apply, students must file the FAFSA® and complete an additional application.
